Personalized Finite Element Models of the Knee Joint: a Platform for Optimal Orthopedic Surgery Pre-Planning.

profile of Hamid Naghibi Beidokhti

Thesis
In this thesis the aim was to develop FE models of human knee joints, as a surgical pre-planning tool in order to improve the orthopaedic surgical outcomes. For this purpose, first the essences of some modelling aspects were assessed. Subsequently, two approaches to develop knee models with personalized ligament properties were investigated. Finally, the FE models were utilized as surgical pre-planning tools to improve the outcome of two common orthopaedic surgeries; ACL reconstruction and meniscus implantation. As a part of the BioMechTools project, all the methodologies were designed in a way that they are expandable to an in-vivo application as a diagnostic, surgery pre-operative planning and decision tool for knee surgeons. This means that all the steps to build up an FE model should be able to be performed minimal- or non-invasively.

Biography
Hamid completed his B.Sc. studies in Mechanical Engineering in 2009 at the Ferdowsi University of Mashad (FUM), and his M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering, at the Sharif University of Technology (SUT), in the field of Applied Design-Biomechanics. His master thesis was on ‘Designing a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) to obtain minimum wear on contact surfaces and reduce the stress shielding effect using Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) and SMA’. In August 2013, he came to the Netherlands to continue his studies as a Ph.D. student. In his PhD studies he was involved in ‘Biomechanical Diagnostic, Pre-Planning and Outcome Tools to improve Musculoskeletal Surgery’, acronym ‘BioMechTools’, funded by a ‘European Research Council, Advanced Grant’ and awarded to Prof.Dr.Ir. Nico Verdonschot. In this collaborative project, he was in charge of finite element modelling of the lower extremity, more particularly, the knee joint.
