About Me

I finished my study Biomedical Sciences in the summer of 2012. My masters was focused on Clinical Human Movement Sciences. During my study I’ve done internships at the ORL, the RUNMC Department of Neurology and the Netherlands Institute for Sports and Physical Activity (NISB). The technological aspects have always drawn my attention, and will also be a big part of my work as a Ph.D. student at the ORL, where I started in September 2012.

Research Impression

My project is focused on the knee joint. As Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) (fig.1) is a common procedure in severe chronic knee injury, it is a research field in motion. I will be working on expanding our current Finite Element (FE) knee model to be used for a wider range of purposes. Musculoskeletal modeling (fig.2) will be used to improve the reality on knee loading procedures in the FE model. Simultaneously, the methods are used to test a new type of femoral component (fig.3). A prominent disadvantage of conventional knee implants is the phenomenon of ‘stress shielding’. It causes bone tissue surrounded by the femoral components to decay by loss of bone minerals. This can eventually lead to fracturing of the condyles, or can impair a revision on the long term. Therefore, I will investigate this new implant to being as adequate as conventional implants, yet increasing the long-term success of TKA by preventing (amongst others) stress shielding.
