I received a bachelors and a master’s of science in exercise science from the University of New Mexico, USA. I choose to complete a masters in Biomedical Sciences at Radboud with a double major in Clinical Human Movement Sciences and Human Pathobiology. I was fortunate to be awarded a PhD position in the Orthopedics department. Here I will continue my research on platelet rich plasma’s (PRP) effect on cell culturing.

Meniscal tears are one of the most common form of injuries to the knee joint. Injuries in the avascular zone have impaired healing. A current treatment for meniscal injuries is a (partial) menisectomy. When portions of the meniscus are removed there is an increased chance for early osteoarthritis due to the increased stresses placed on the joint. To minimize contact forces a meniscus implant can be inserted. Currently we are investigating scaffolds that allow meniscus fibrochondrocytes from them surrounding tissue to infiltrate, thereby causing repair to the damaged portion of the meniscus. To enhance this repair PRP has been investigated to improve cellular response.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is autologous, inexpensive, minimally invasive to obtain and can be stored for later use. As the name expresses, PRP has a higher concentration of platelets. Platelets contain growth factors (VEGF, TGF-beta and PDGF), which play an important role in tissue healing. Another aspect of my research includes investigating the isolation and identification of growth factors that are present in PRP. This classification allows a comparison of PRP between patients as well as improving the clinical accessibility and outcomes.
